It all started when…

A group of women from St Peter’s Battersea have been meeting together to pray about God’s love for our beautiful planet.  With increasing understanding of climate change and a recent media interest in how the UK disposes of its plastic waste, many of us have begun using creative ways to reduce waste in our homes.  However, whilst doing our food shops many of us were frustrated by the lack of choice in supermarkets to buy food that is not wrapped in single-use plastic.  There are many creative and beautifully presented plastic-free shops opening on our high streets which are helping to open up consumer options, but it can be hard for these independent stores to compete with supermarket prices.  We began wondering if there was a way that St Peter’s Battersea could step up and create a space for people to buy foods with less plastic and at supermarket prices.

Our model is to bulk-buy kitchen staples and cleaning products from a quality food wholesaler.  We will then sell these foods at supermarket prices and ask people to bring their own reusable containers.  We will focus on foods which tend to be wrapped in plastic in the supermarkets, can be purchased from the wholesaler in large quantities (e.g. 20kg sacks), and can be sold on at supermarket-prices.

What’s in our name?

Manna is the Hebrew word used in the Bible to describe the bread that rained down from heaven to feed the Israelites whilst they travelled in the desert (Exodus 16).  The Israelites were asked to only gather up a day’s portion and they were satisfied.  And there was no waste.  We hope this helps to remind us that food, albeit bought over the counter, is an incredible gift from God.  And we love that God’s supernatural provision was waste-free.
